Description
The first Chakra, Muladhara is located at the base of the spinal column, at the root of the reproductive organs and the anus. It is a seat of the kundalini serpent, the energy of the Shakti, which when activated, allows a great receptivity and connection with the nonephysical realms and ultimately leads to a state of bliss.
Linked with the primordial survival instincts, safety, security as well as a feeling of rootedness and grounding, in the physical as well as a non physical sens.
The main function of Muladhara is to keep in balance all physical energies within the human’s body, mind and spirit.
It is known as the center of manifestation. The energy that needs to be transformed and expressed on the level of the matter, comes directly from Muladhara.
From Sanskrit Muladhara translates into ‘Mul’, base and ‘Adhara’, support.
Location
This chakra activates in utero to one year (from initiation and conception to the first year of life). In Hindu tradition the activation takes place from years one to seven and connects to the age of child focused on basic needs, self - centring and survival
Colour Corresponding Element
The colour of this chakra is deep, vibrant red to black. The red connects to the Goddess Shakti and the principle of the movement ‘flow’, while the black colour stands for Matter.

The main quality of the first chakra is grounding.

Ruling Planet is Saturn.

Connected with the adrenal glands, located atop of the kidneys.

Imbalance within the First Chakra:
Signs of The First Chakra being Underactive
Deficiency in the first chakra shows as being underweight, chaotic, experiencing lack of focus and motivation, lack of self discipline, poor boundaries, feeling not accepted and unlovable, depressed, financial problems.
Signs of The First Chakra being Overactive
An excess within this chakra shows as being overweight, paranoid, obsessed with security, drawn to addictive behaviours, hoarding, often dominant aggressive.
Balance within the First Chakra:
Feeling of comfort within once own body, experiencing a feeling of safety and security, grounded in the material existence.
From a deep sense of connection with the earth arises ability to manifest and materialise things and events, as well as to withdraw and be still without overracting.
Diseases
Eating disorders, arthritis, problems with legs, knees, ankles, issues related to bowel movements, large intestine, anis, bones and teeth, weak base of the spine, sexual disorders, addictions to drugs and alcohol.
Granthi (Knot)
Granthi are the locks the Kundalini needs to pass through to ascend. The brahma Granthi needs to be unraveled to release the illusion of the earth as a prison. It represents a resistance to change. Once it is open and unlocked, the Kundalini can rise along the Shushumna, the main energy center passing along the spine.
In the practice of Yoga, the emphasise is onto the balance and grounding through the feet, legs and pelvis, the forward bends are also an important component of the practise and evoke a feeling of surrendering into the earth.
When the first chakra is out of balance it brings along a state of anxiety, fear, unsteadiness, insecurity, or even frustration.
On the physical level it also manifests as anorexia nervosa, obesity, bulimia, as well as all sorts of problems in the lower parts of the body as hips, lower back, knees, ankles and feet.
When the first chakra is balanced one is healthy and happy with life, full of vital pranic energy, is able to easily focus attention and achieve increased concentration.
